Cichlasoma Sp.(Yellow Blood Parrot Cichlid, Yellow Jellybean Parrot Cichlid)
Blood parrot cichlids are hybrids and less widely sold in the UK than they are elsewhere. They have laterally compressed body shape, bent spine, and a somewhat deformed head, the mouth being folded over into a beak-like snout. Colouration varies from yellow to dark red, with pink and orange specimens being most common.
This New World Parrot Cichlid is a freshwater aquarium fish that will grow anywhere from 15-20CM when fully grown. Not to be confused with the saltwater Parrotfish, Jellybean Parrots will grow a max of 20CM.
Parrot Cichlids have become common throughout temperate regions of the United States. It appears to be a cross of a South American cichlid, a Central American cichlid and a Red Devil. Originally orange in color, the natural colors have evolved to range anywhere from orange to red to purple.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Filtration needs to be robust, but because these fish are so deformed they cannot swim well, so turbulence needs to be avoided.
Feeding is generally straightforward, but blood parrots are prone to constipation, so regular offerings of plant material, for example cooked peas, is important.
Generally best kept singly or in groups of their own kind. Blood parrots can coexist with robust catfish such as plecs, but sometimes the catfish bully the cichlids, so care needs to be taken if this combination is used. Blood parrots are territorial and aggressive, but their deformities put them at a disadvantage when kept with normal cichlids.
Blood parrot cichlids are usually sterile, and breeding in home aquaria is very uncommon. Spawning make take place, but for whatever reason the eggs don't hatch or the fry are so weak they die within a few days.
