Geophagus brasiliensis(Pearl Cichlid)

A variable species. Typically pinkish-green in colour with numerous pearly spots along. Fins are more or less reddish in colour, often with some blue markings as well. Females are smaller than males. Large males may develop a pronounced nuchal hump and often have quite elongate dorsal and anal fins.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

An "eartheater" cichlids, this fish forages by sifting mud for small prey animals such as worms.

Relatively peaceful towards other species but territorial among its own kind. Pairs work together to protect the nest, the male guarding the territory and the female minding the eggs. Quite tricky to breed though, because pairs are sometimes difficult to establish. Best results are obtained by rearing a group of juveniles together and then allowing them to pair off naturally.

Family Group: South and Central American Cichlids
Distribution Southern Brazil and Uruguay
Temperature 24-26C
Size Up to 28 cm, usually smaller
Water Parameters Adaptable, but preferably neutral and not too hard.
Water PH 6.5-7.5
