Apistogramma nijsseni

A dwarf cichlid which develops very vivid colouration when kept in their ideal water conditions. Females are characterised by their yellow colouration whilst the males are blue. These are one of the prettiest of the Apistogramma.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

A generally peaceful cichlid, but can be territorial towards members of their own species especially when spawning.

To achieve breeding success the fish will need to be kept in soft and acidic water conditions.

Keep the fish in a tank with plenty of hiding places such as caves or a flower pot. Condition the fish on a good and varied diet. You will know when they are close to spawning because the female will start to display to the male. She will select a spawning site which will probably be a cave. Once spawning has ocurred, remove the male and the female will guard the eggs. Wait until the fry have hatched and are free swimming before removing the female.

Family Group: South and Central American Cichlids
Distribution South America
Temperature 25-27C
Size Around 7cm is the maximum size likely to be attained with the females slightly smaller
Water Parameters Soft and acidic conditions are preferred
Water PH 5.5-6.5
