Leporinus arcus(Lipstick Leporinus)

A large, streamlined fish bearing a series of longitudinal dark bands and reddish fins; the lips are marked with pinkish-orange, from whence it gets its common name.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

This is one of the more peaceful Leporinus, but like other members of the genus it is distinctly opportunistic in its feeding habits. So while plant foods such as algae wafers, curly lettuce and cooked peas should be offered on a regular basis, it also enjoys meaty foods like earthworms. It is not above eating very small fish, should it catch them, and it can be a fin-nipper if kept with slow-moving or long-finned species. Best kept either alone or in a robust community tank with catfish, cichlids and loaches.

Does well across a range of water chemistry conditions, but does favour water with a good strong current and plenty of oxygen. Otherwise very hardy and long lived.

Supposedly a schooling fish in the wild, but unless kept in a fairly large group in a very big tank, individuals are apt to become territorial. Juveniles are best reared together if you wish to keep multiple specimens in one aquarium.

There are no reports of breeding in captivity.
